WATERMELON WONDER

In the evenings, there are trucks like this one parked on almost every street corner. It is watermelon season right now, reflected by the price, NZ40c per kilogram. After wondering where they could all possibly come from, I asked my "Lanzhou Mum" Jun, who said that they come from the villages outside the city. All very well in theory but when the land outside of Lanzhou looks like this... it's a bit harder to reconcile.

Nothing but brown hills as far as the eye can see...

So, a lush, green oasis of watermelon growing fields must exist somewhere out there in the middle of all that arid land but... I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around this one.
